Fisherman's Bastion

Beautiful views of the Buda Hills, Pest and the Danube River are easily accessible from various locations in and around the city of Budapest. The following are a few of the best places to peruse the sights of Hungary’s capital city.

1). Fishermen’s Bastion. Situated at a spot on Castle Hill where fish mongers once hawked their wares, the neo-Romanesque cluster of white stone towers, arches, and columns that make up Fishermen’s Bastion features a magnificent porch that is an excellent place from which to scan the Danube and Pest beyond. Since 2000, it has become customary to charge a fee for the right to explore the grounds, but the price is reasonable and the experience is well worth the expense.

2). János Hill. At nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, the summit of János Hill is the highest point in Budapest, and an excellent place to take in a commanding view of the city and the river. A chairlift will take you to the top for a nominal fee. Once there, you can climb the lookout tower, explore the nearby Children’s Railway, and feast on lángos, a traditional dish consisting of salty fried dough served with sour cream.

3). Authenticity at Avar. If you’re after an up-close-and-personal look at authentic Hungarian pub culture, the Avar beer garden and the terrace of Platán pub near Erzsébet Bridge are dependable (and affordable) establishments. Both are particularly pleasant during the summer and in fair weather.
